WD 1TB GREEN POWER RAID EDITION

We all love the Western
Digital Green Power hard drive because it combines
the galactic capacity of 1000GB and unique
power-saving features. We tested that drive in
the past, and it didn't do too bad compared to full
7200-RPM units. But we were unsure of that
consumer version's ability to perform in a RAID
environment. So here we will take a look at
how one drive fares. Then in a future article,
we'll hook four of these up to a RAID controller to
see what happens!
The testbed used is
comprised of the following components:
Manufacturer's
specifications:

Very miserly power
consumption ratings will make any data center
administrator very happy! Less power
consumption also reduces HVAC requirements, lowering
cooling costs.
The operating system is
Windows XP Professional 64-bit Edition.
Individual drive test results as follows:

HD Tach 3.0.1.0, 8MB Zones,
1x WD 1TB RE2-GP

HD Tach 3.0.1.0, 32MB
Zones, 1x WD 1TB RE2-GP

ATTO Disk Benchmark,
1x WD 1TB RE2-GP
Comparing this to the
consumer (non-RE) drive, we see very similar results
with the HD Tach tests. However, the ATTO
Benchmarks tell another story - the write speeds
drop anywhere between 30% to 50%. Not too good
individually, but perhaps in a RAID array, we get
better results... Stay tuned!
