U320 SCSI HDD ROUNDUP

Conclusion

Because of the high price of SCSI drives, making a purchasing decision requires a fair amount of analysis and thought.  Recently however, most if not all of these manufacturers have adopted very similar warranty times, MTBF ratings, and simple replacement procedures in the event drives fail in the field.

That leaves us with performance and value metrics.  Clearly, the performance leader as of this round is the Seagate Cheetah 15K.5.  It simply blew away the competition in the throughput tests, and was not far behind in the random access times, a critical measure of drive responsiveness.  Furthermore, it is the only 15K SCSI drive offered with a 300GB capacity.  Wow.

No doubt, all these drives are redline-worthy.  But if you had to make a choice among this group, the Cheetah 15K.5 is a no-brainer.
