SEAGATE SAVVIO 15K.2

When we first saw the Savvio 15K.1, we were amazed with its revolutionary 2.5" design while spinning at 15k RPM.  Needless to say, its performance was stellar, close enough to its big brother Cheetah.  Today, we look at the 2nd generation Savvio 15k, the 15k.2.  Here are its specs:

Note how the 6Gb/s SAS is available now!

Our test platform is as follows:

Now we go to the individual drive results:

HDTach 3.0.4.0, 32MB Zones

HDTach 3.0.4.0, VAR Zones

Atto Disk Benchmark

Compared to the Savvio 15k.1, the 15k.2 gives an additional 35-40% more speed!  Next, we put two 15k.2 drives in RAID-0...

HDTach 3.0.4.0, 32MB Zones

HDTach 3.0.4.0, VAR Zones

Amazingly fast performance!  Comparing these results to the Cheetah 15k.6 in RAID-0 we did, we see that the difference is small yet still significant, about 100MB/s in the larger chunk sizes.

When it comes to speed, these Savvios are giving the Cheetahs a run for their money.  The smaller 2.5" form factor allows administrators to be more creative with arrays, and pack more physical drives in a given rack space.  Soon, all drives will transition to this smaller form factor, reducing weight, power consumption, and noise.  And when it comes to 2.5" Enterprise units, the Savvios 15k.2 is king.
