SEAGATE CONSTELLATION 500GB

Seagate recently
announced a new line of Enterprise HDDs called the
Constellation. Its purpose is to provide large
amounts of storage at the lowest cost and power
consumption. Compared to its Savvio brethren,
the Constellation spins at 7200RPM, and comes in
both SAS and SATA flavors. The drive we are
testing here is a the 500GB SATA version.
Here are its specs:

Note how the 6Gb/s SAS is available now!
Our test platform is as
follows:
Now we go to the
individual drive test results:

HDTach 3.0.4.0, 32MB Zones

HDTach 3.0.4.0, VAR Zones

Atto Disk Benchmark
Performance of the Constellation isn't stellar,
but for Enterprises requiring massive storage in as
little space as possible, using the least amount of
power, this is a wise choice. We see the drive
topping out at around 100-105MB/s, not bad at all if
you compare this to laptop 2.5" HDDs. Putting
a few of these together in a fault-tolerant array
will provide corporations with insane storage,
lightning speeds, and use very little rack space.
