HITACHI TRAVELSTAR 5K500.B

We first saw Hitachi's
5K500 drive
here.
What we didn't like about it even before testing was
it's 12.5mm height. Yes, it was too tall for
many notebooks and external HDD enclosures.
But now, Hitachi has put the drive on a rigorous
diet, and it has now slimmed down to the more
acceptable 9.5mm height, also known as the 5K500.B. Here are its specs:

Our test platform is as
follows:
Now we go to the
individual drive test results:

HDTach 3.0.4.0, 32MB Zones

HDTach 3.0.4.0, VAR Zones

Atto Disk Benchmark
Okay, so how does the 5K500.B compare with the
current king of 500GB 2.5" drives? Well,
click here and you will see the results of the
Scorpo Blue 500GB along with the Samsung HM500LI.
In the Atto benchmark, the 5K500.B beats the Scorpio
Blue in Read Speed, but not in Writes. As for
HD Tach tests, we see the 5K500.B outrun the Scorpio
Blue by a more significant margin. And there
we have it, the Hitachi 5K500.B is the performance
leader in the 500GB 2.5" HDD category!
