100GB 2.5 Inch HDD Comparison

Introduction

We are obsessed with storage.  We are digital packrats.  We have dozens of games, hundreds of movies, thousands of MP3s and countless JPEGs.  Storing these files are relatives easy on desktop computers because of the proliferation of cheap spacious HDDs and optical drives.  But what about portable storage?  What about road warriors?  Well, only recently have HDD companies created triple-digit capacity 2.5 inch HDDs.  In this article, we examine 100GB HDDs from Seagate, Toshiba, Fujitsu and an older 80GB from Hitachi for comparison with a previous-generation HDD.  Which drive deserves to be placed in your laptop?  Which one is best for your MP3 player?  Our tests show you various performance and other parameters.

UPDATED:

Hitachi's fast new 5K100 has replaced the 80GB Hitachi in the original report!

PLEASE NOTE:

Some laptop and MP3 manufacturers will consider your warranty VOID if you decide to crack open your device.  Please consult your users manual or contact your device's manufacturer to be 100% sure.
