1TB SATA HDDs!

Seagate Barracuda ES.2 1000GB

Seagate has been a consistent performer in recent years in producing top-rated drives not just in performance numbers but also in customer satisfaction and reliability.  We test here a pair of the Barracuda ES.2 drives, their enterprise-grade mega-drives similar to the Hitachi A7K1000.

Here are Seagate's specs.  As you can see, there is also a SAS version, which we will be testing very soon.  Too bad it only has a 16MB cache.  Anyways, Seagate comes through again with impressive reliability ratings.

Here are the results:

HD Tach 3.0.1.0, 8MB Zones

HD Tach 3.0.1.0, 32MB Zones

ATTO Disk Benchmark

Again, we test the Barracudas in RAID-0 and RAID-1 arrays, just like the A7K1000.  The same RAID card is used.

RAID-0:  HD Tach 3.0.1.0, 8MB Zones

RAID-0: HD Tach 3.0.1.0, 32MB Zones

RAID-0: ATTO Disk Benchmark

RAID-1: HD Tach 3.0.1.0, 8MB Zones

RAID-1: HD Tach 3.0.1.0, 32MB Zones

RAID-1:  ATTO Disk Benchmark

After comparing the results of the A7K1000 and the ES.2, we see the ES.2 beating the A7K1000 is nearly every single category.  This is most likely due to the increased areal density of the ES.2 - it only has four platters versus the A7K1000's five-platter design.
