HOLIDAY 2008
ROAD WARRIOR'S GIFT GUIDE

Travel Router /AP and Other Gadgets
Many office buildings, hotels, and some airports
have live ethernet connections ready for use.
But what if you want the freedom of wireless?
The answer is a travel router.
Travel Router / AP:
Linksys WTR54GS

Built-in retractable
US power plug, easy-to-use WAN and LAN connections

Handsome carrying case with rolled-up flat CAT5
cable
We constantly walk into
meeting rooms with hot ethernet jacks, but weak
and/or secure wireless. Having the WTR54GS
handy allows us to create a mini-WLAN, giving us
connectivity at nearly any part of the meeting
vicinity. Best of all, it's firmware can
easily be upgraded with DD-WRT. Now there is
no 802.11n model available. For that, you'd
need to go with Apple's solution, something we
considered but decided against due to its lack of
configurability. One thing we didn't like is
the ugly flat cable. It sure doesn't look like
UTP, so its performance is probably miserable too.
So we searched for a retractable CAT5 cable and
found this:

ZipLinq Retractable
CAT5e / CAT6 250MHz Gigabit Network Cable, 5' when
extended
it fits nicely in place
of the old silver cable, and saves the the
inconvenience of rolling it up each time.

ZipLinq also carries other products such as a USB
extender cable, with a cell charging tip, a headset,
and so many others. Any road warrior can
appreciate the space-saving size, neatness, and
convenience of a ZipLinq product.
