AMD ATHLON X2 7850 BLACK EDITION + GA-MA78GM-S2H

The AMD Athlon is a series of processors which has a long and storied past.  It was the first to hit 1GHz, enjoyed tremendous success with the Athlon XP line, and now has evolved to the Athlon 64 and Athlon X2 lines.  But what makes this new 7850 so special?  Well, it is basically a 2-core Phenom "Kuma" core but labeled as an Athlon X2 Black Edition.  The architectural highlights are as follows:

  • 2 x 512KB L2 cache, one for each core

  • 2MB L3 cache (yes, L3!)

  • 1.8 GHz HT speed

  • 2.8 GHz CPU speed

  • 1.2 - 1.25 Vcore

  • 95W TDP

  • Socket AM2+

  • B3 stepping

  • UNLOCKED MULTIPLIER

Unlocked, L3 cache, faster HT, and AM2+.  Very cool indeed.  Our testing platform will use the Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H MB, a Cooler Master Real Power Pro 850W power supply, Windows XP SP3, and 2x 2GB of DDR2-800 memory from Corsair.  Our test results are as follows:

*DVD is My Fellow Americans ripped to HDD.  DVD Shrink compresses the entire rip to 53.7%, with deep analysis, and the 'sharp' adaptive error compensation setting, to another HDD folder.  Analysis files deleted prior to tests.

Results are not bad for a dual-core CPU.  WinRAR seems low for a 2.8GHz CPU.

Much better numbers here.  This is where the 2.8 GHz clock speed seems to be paying off.

Now we see some limitations of DDR2 and latency issues with the L3.

Not too bad here for dual cores.

Here is the AMD Power Monitor showing the CPU when in Max Battery mode, and in Always On mode.  Note how the speed is throttled back to 1.4 GHz @ 1.05v.

The overall impression we get from the 7850 is that it is a great CPU with cutting-edge features, and an unlocked multiplier - great for gamers and overclockers.  But perhaps the most important number is the one that isn't shown above - its PRICE!  Yes folks, this magnificent CPU is streeting under US$70!  If it weren't for the price, this would get a much lower rating.  but we are happy to award this a 90%!
